1916 Suit

The project is nearing completion now, but there are no pictures yet*.

It is based on one of the patterns in my 1915/16 magazines which suggested dark blue cheviot, white ribbed silk for the inside of the collar, and black trimmings. The lady on the left presents the skirt only with the suggested blouse - buttoning down the back, thus unsuitable for the modern self-sufficient single woman.

Unfortunately, I don't know what cheviot is and couldn't find any suitable-looking fabric in dark blue. What I found was a light grey wool that could go with just about anything. The trimming was difficult as it was supposed to curve on the sleeve, i.e. it had to be flexible - no ribbons! I chose white gimp trim as black would have made the ensemble a bit drab. The buttons are dark brown (almost black) horn - I reckoned that actual black would have been too harsh, and I liked the slight unevenness of the colour. Here's a scan of the materials used - the colours/brightness may of course be slightly distorted in th scan. Only thing missing is the lining, which is light grey viscose - a bit lighter than the fashion fabric.

Besides resizing and choosing different materials, I have made no changes. It remains to be seen what kind of blouse I'll make to go under it.

More to come.

*) UPDATE: The project has been nearing completion for about a year now. I just can't get myself to make the final steps. It's always the same with my projects.
