Party at the house of Montagu

by Marcellus Laroon, 1715

This drawing gives a wonderful example of English costume in transition, on the border between baroque and rococo style.

The older gentlemen still wear the great wig, while the one on the right already wears a catogan wig.

The dancing lady wears an early form of the robe à l'anglaise with the skirt gathered up in back, but the sleeves have no cuffs yet and the skirt retains the horizontal trim of the late manteau.
